Adult Education Guidance as a Public Service is one of the main support activities in adult education that significantly contributes to:

• greater accessibility to education,
• greater enrolment in education and
• enhanced effectiveness and efficiency of adult education and learning.

Guidance was introduced into the adult education system in 2000 with the establishment of Centres for Information and Guidance in Adult Education – IGAE centres.

These centres operated regionally, providing free guidance to adults on diverse learning and education opportunities. For those unable or unwilling to participate in traditional learning, Self-directed learning centres (SDLCs) provided an option for free organised independent learning.

Since 2021 guidance in adult education is a part of public service, being provided by 35 public adult education centres. Its implementation is defined by the Guidelines for implementing adult education as a publice service.

Adult Education Guidance as a Public Service encompasses the following three areas of guidance:

1. enrolment in education and continuation of education,
2. identification and documentation of knowledge and skills,
3. organised self-directed learning.
